The Wright Stuff

A long time ago, well before I opened my own studio, I knew next to nothing about the beauty industry or how to enter it. I had a passion for hair and I wanted to make it my career, but I had no idea how to achieve that. Luckily, I discovered Crystal Wright’s amazingly insightful book The Hair, Makeup, and Fashion Styling Career Guide. Instantly, this book became my bible. I read it from cover to cover, and now years later I’m a celebrity hairstylist with my own studio. I’m living my dream and I’ll never forget how much Crystal Wright contributed to my success.

Before becoming the full-time author, speaker, and mentor for aspiring artists Crystal is now known as, she was an agent representing photographers and artists in the beauty and fashion industry. Once she became successful, she was eager to help fledgling artists by writing down what she’d learned about the business. At first she expected to create a 16-page manual outlining how to create a portfolio and land an agent, but instead it ended up becoming a 180-page book. Years later, she’s still adding to her workbook, which is now in it’s 5th edition and is 400-pages!

As a young hairstylist, I became obsessed with the book when I started reading it. I learned aspects of the biz that I never even knew existed. It taught me how to land jobs, find agents, test with photographers, and build my portfolio. And as I’ve grown as an artist I still reference it to make sure I am taking the proper steps to sustain my career.

One of the most exciting moments of my professional life was when I got to meet Crystal Wright—when she became my agent! That’s right, as a stylist in my twenties I was able to impress Crystal with my portfolio—after using all her tips of course. It was a great victory for me and propelled me into one of the most exciting times of my life.

As I said before, Crystal Wright is no longer representing clients since her books and workshops have become such huge successes. But I wanted to encourage all the hopeful hairstylists, makeup artists, and photographers out there to read The Hair, Makeup, and Fashion Styling Career Guide. It is an unrivaled guide to a career in beauty that is invaluable to the up and coming artist. And you should most definitely check out her 3-day workshop, which provides even greater insights to your dream career. Who knows, you might even see me at one of her workshops. I’ve sat on one of her workshop panels as an industry expert.

Giving Kids A Shot

Making others feel beautiful is why I love my job; but when my work can actually save lives, I leap at these opportunities with blowdryer in hand. Last week, Norma BLAQUE Studios teamed up with meningitis survivor and Mrs. Ethnic World International 2012 Daisi Pollard Sepulveda when she attended the National Meningitis Association (NMA) Give Kids A Shot Gala on April 23. As an inspiring—and fashionable—advocate for awareness of this horrible disease, styling Daisi ended up being one of the most rewarding assignments I’ve had since we opened our doors. Before I tell you who she was wearing and how their collaboration is helping the cause, I need to share with you what I’ve learned about meningitis and meningococcal disease.

Meningitis is a deadly disease that strikes nearly 1,500 Americans a year, and 11 percent of those infected will die. Meningococcal disease, sometimes called bacterial meningitis, is a potentially fatal bacterial infection that may cause death or disability within hours. Adolescents and young adults are at greater risk for meningococcal disease than most, accounting for 15 percent of all cases. One out of 7 who get the disease will die. Among those who survive, approximately 20 percent live with permanent disabilities, such as brain damage, hearing loss, loss of kidney function, or limb amputations. And one of the most upsetting aspects to meningococcal disease is that it is often misdiagnosed because its early symptoms are much like those of the flu.

I was devastated when I learned this information, but luckily there was a glimmer of hope. These horrible illnesses can be prevented. Through routine vaccinations at 11-12 years old with a booster dose at age 16, meningococcal disease can be prevented in preteens and teens. But because awareness of this information is not widespread, hundreds of thousands of Americans continue to suffer.

And that’s why the National Meningitis Association exists: to raise awareness and make these vaccines available. Last week, on April 23, hundreds, including survivors and celebrities, gathered at the iconic New York Athletic Club on Central Park South for the Give Kids A Shot Gala gathered to celebrate the NMA’s tenth anniversary and bring attention to the importance for parents and students to be educated about its symptoms and how to prevent infection. Celebrities such as Charlie Sheen, Susan Sarandon, Steve Buscemi, Ed Harris, Felicity Huffman, and William H. Macy were in attendance.

Daisi was in attendance, named as Honorary Committee Member for the Give Kids A Shot Gala. A survivor of Bacterial Meningitis herself, which she contracted in 2006, she teamed up with designer Laurie Elyse who created a special dress featuring the real stories and photographs of lives touched by meningitis. Literally draped in the stories of victims and survivors, she celebrated their lives and helped raised funds by bidding the garment at the NMA Gala’s silent auction.

Prior to the event, Daisi was looking for a team to do her hair and makeup for a photography shoot to promote the gala. We were blessed when she chose Norma BLAQUE Studios as the artists. I didn’t know much about meningitis before meeting Daisi, but she taught me so much and was an absolute pleasure to work with.

She was such an inspiration, and I will never forget what her goal for the event:

“The biggest message I want to share is about survivorship,” she told me. “I want everyone to know that you can survive this disease and do something creative with it. This dress is something beautiful and I am glad to share it with others.”

To complete the look we went Hollywood with a Veronica Lake wave. She looked glamorous, perfect for the evening.  Check out the images of Daisi below and let us know what you think of the look. And make sure to read up on the gala and learn more about the National Meningitis Association’s Give Kids A Shot Gala. It’s a cause you should be aware of!

Get Up Close With Our Photography Suite

Ever since Norma BLAQUE Studios opened its doors, it’s been busy here! I love seeing the smiling faces of clients as my team casts their makeup and hairstyling magic on them. But what is most exciting for me are the flashes coming from the photography studio. When I first envisioned the studio, I foresaw it to be more than just a high-quality salon, I dreamed of a place where women could also be photographed and reminded of their beauty for the rest of their lives. And beyond even that, I envisioned the studio being a haven where young photographers could hone their own craft.

Most of the press I get revolves around my work as a hairstylist and makeup artist, but I’m actually a photographer as well. Since I was young, I’ve been entranced by the camera. Like my beauty work, I’m always striving to grow and better my craft. That’s why I feel education is the most rewarding aspect of being an artist. Starting out, I wish that I had access to more skilled mentors as I sharpened my skills. That’s why I’m proud that our fully functional photography suite is available for rent to the student who wants to test out their skills—not to mention the wide array of talented hair and makeup artists hanging around here who can lend their services if you want to experiment with different looks.

So whether you’re hoping for some styling, to capture the perfect shot for your mantle or a testing ground for your camera skills, Norma BLAQUE Studios is the place for you. If you haven’t stopped by yet, I hope to see you here soon!

BLAQUE team pays tribute to Eazy-E

Last week the Norma BLAQUE Studios Travel Team received another exciting assignment from the Hip-Hop publication XXL Magazine! On the 17th anniversary of rapper Eazy-E’s death, XXL wanted to pay tribute to him through a photo shoot with his daughter Erin Bria Wright. So our assignment was to create three distinct makeup looks for Erin as she honored her late father while recreated some of his iconic album covers.

The moment I heard about this shoot, I needed an expert artist that understands how to quickly switch between various looks. So, of course, I sent our makeup maven and “Brow Guru” Leslie Mendoza to represent the BLAQUE team. And represent she did! She worked with the fabulous Alexander George Photography team and together they slammed out some amazing looks for Erin. Check them out below!

The first look was very angelic and natural, which made sense because Erin would be taking a series of shots at her father’s grave. We traveled all the way out to Rose Hills Memorial Park in Whittier so Erin could pose at her father’s headstone. How gorgeous did these shots turn out?

For the second look, Leslie helped recreate the mugshot look from Eazy-E’s album cover “Str8 off tha Streetz of Muthaphukkin Compton.” The shoot was taken outside at night so Leslie had the challenge of applying a look that would hold up against some harsh overhead lighting. Again, Erin looked perfect.

The last look, and the most fun, was an edgy style that Erin used to promote her new single. She sported some fierce red hair and smoky black eyes to finish the looks. Do you think Leslie was able to turn up the edge?

Makeovers for the Modern Mom

As a mother of three juggling the tasks of running my own business, being a supportive wife, and looking fantastic at all times, I am living the life of a Modern Mom. And sometimes that can be daunting. Luckily, this week I got some major tips from THE Modern Mom herself: Brooke Burke. That’s right, Dancing with the Stars champion, author, and mom extraordinaire Brooke Burke was in the studio!

Brooke is such an inspiration to me. She’s fun, full of life, and cares deeply about helping mothers reach their potential. So if you’re a mom and you’re modern, you definitely need to check out her website www.modernmom.com.  On it she posts stories, blogs, video, links, and a variety of other content that pertains to be being the best mom you can be—and always looking gorgeous by feeling great about yourself.

As part of her website, Brooke wanted to give six very lucky moms a makeover. So she asked the Norma BLAQUE Studios team to work our magic. It was such a fun day in the studio, filled with smiles, laughs, and some fierce hair and makeup. My team, as if they were my own children, never fail to make me proud.

To see how we made these mothers shine, stay turned to www.modernmom.com. Each week they’ll post a new episode documenting one of the makeovers. The videos are a great chance to appreciate these moms and also learn some news ways to highlight your own natural beauty.

More pictures will be posted as the episodes air so don’t forget to come back and let me know what you think of these moms’ new looks!

Another Norma BLAQUE Travel Team Adventure

Another day, another assignment for the Norma BLAQUE Travel Team! The latest excursion paired us with celebrity photographer Ari Michelson, who has always been a pleasure to style for. To add to my excitement, two more good friends were involved with the shoot: wardrobe stylist Bory Tan and makeup guru Uzmee Krakovszki. You won’t meet two greater gals!

My main BLAQUE team member on board was the amazing Bethy Mireles. I wasn’t able to be on set for the entire shoot so she took the reigns while I was away. I want to say I was nervous to leave her, but I wasn’t in the slightest! Each member of the group is not only a strong team player but also an MVP when they go solo.

We were responsible for three looks on three different models. The day had a very Victoria’s Secret-esque tone. The looks being featured were flirty and fun sleepwear in bright pinks and blues. Ari envisioned an effortless hair look and that’s what we delivered—although making hair look effortless often requires loads of effort! In the end, I was extremely pleased with Bethy’s work. She did our team proud!

When my plans for Norma BLAQUE Studios began, I wanted to make sure that the styling didn’t just live within the physical studio in San Fernando. I imagined a team that could add life and pizzazz to any event no matter its location. It’s so great to see that the team is thriving. It makes me eager for the many future events to come. It’s my hope that one of those events is yours!

The Art Next Door

When I was looking for spaces to build my studio, I searched all over to find the perfect spot. I consider my work art so it was very important to me that I settled in a place that was inspiring, constantly motivating me to keep my craft fresh and edgy. So when I visited a location in San Fernando, I was immediately drawn next door to La Galleria Gitana, an art gallery displaying exciting works of fellow artists.

Just a sampling of the art next door

As I wandered through the gallery, admiring the paintings and sculptures, already my head was overflowing with new ideas for the studio and my personal projects as a hairstylist and makeup artist. This was the sign I needed. The space beside it would be my studio. There, next door to the gallery, I would cultivate my studio and contribute to the artistic atmosphere of the area.

It felt so appropriate that when my studio had its grand opening, the very next day the La Galleria Gitana had an opening of a new exhibit as well. I was exhilarated to see our spaces feeding off each others’ momentum to share our art with the community. It was incredibly inspiring and I hope that these two hubs of artistry continue to feed each other.

NFL star Anthony Davis stopped by the studio. My hubby David was starstruck!I believe everyone should experience as much art as they can. So when you’re stopping by for a session at Norma BLAQUE Studios, you should also stop by La Galleria Gitana. Who knows how it will touch and inspire you?

Check out some more photos from the gallery opening below!

The Door’s Open, Girls!

After all the blood, sweat and shears that went into it, Norma BLAQUE Studios is officially open for business! It’s been a busy two months for me, and even busier for the building itself! In just seven weeks, my team took an empty space and transformed it into a fierce studio where you can get your makeup applied, hair did, and pictures taken. I couldn’t have done it without so many people: savvy entrepreneur Omnia; my patient hubby; my loving family; my amazing hair and makeup artists; the construction team; my stylish friends; ahhh! There are so many people to thank! Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU to everyone who has made this a possibility!

Before and after

Look at the Kim Kardashian look-alike that stopped by!

March 1, 2012 was the big day. It was a new month and a new stage for Norma BLAQUE. We celebrated our new clients and pampered them with blow dries, sexy styling and expert makeup application. As I waked through the studio, seeing my artists at work and new clients strolling through the doors, tears of joy welled in my eyes. My dream is no longer a dream; it’s a reality! I am beyond words.

So now the lights are installed, the chairs are set, the artists are here, the doors are open. But something else is missing…it’s YOU! What are you waiting for? Come down to Norma BLAQUE Studios and let us flaunt you in a fierce new look!

Norma Blaque Studios Test Shoot Today

Just a little preview of what’s to come… Watch this space!

The Travel Team Unites…

After months of planning and just a week before the grand opening of Norma BLAQUE Studios (!!!!!), the BLAQUE Travel Team gathered for its very first off-site event. I’m actually having trouble writing about it right now because it just happened and I’m still so jittery with excitement!

The assignment was a full-on magazine shoot where my team was asked to create four looks (hair and makeup) for a 10-page spread in LA HOT Magazine. After reading up on the magazine I couldn’t think of a more appropriate publication to serve as the travel team’s first assignment. If you’re not familiar with LA HOT, you should be, especially if you live in Southern California. LA HOT’s mission is to dispel the stereotype that LA is plastic and display the true substance of Angelenos working in the arts. That mission is everything I am attempting to do with my studio. I want to bring together artists that are not just talented people, but are good people that are truly in love with the art they create.

As I planned for this shoot, I handpicked my team and I couldn’t have been happier with the turnout. I knew we were fully equipped and ready to handle four looks, but I was absolutely IN HEAVEN when I witnessed the cohesive and inspiring results the team cranked out. The images attached speak for themselves on the workmanship, but the versatility, professionalism and spirit that my team embodied is what truly touched me. And I wasn’t the only ones that noticed. By the end of the day, the powers-that-be at LA HOT informed us that our images may be considered for this issue’s cover! Not a bad first assignment, I say! Our fingers are crossed.

But, at this point, making the cover or not doesn’t matter much to me. What has my heart pumping is that this shoot is just the beginning for us. The BLAQUE Travel Team has more than proven their worth and I am eager to see the heights to which we will soar. From here on I have plans to grow the team by triple its size, adding more superb artists who will allow us to take on any challenge that comes our way. Larger shoots, weddings, whatever our clients need, we can handle it with grace and ease. LA HOT was just as appetizer, and I can’t wait for the next course.

And the best news is, our in-house photographer Tyler was there to capture everything that happened at the shoot. I can’t wait to relive this momentous day and share it with all of you. Stay tuned to this blog and you’ll soon see firsthand why I am completely in love with my team.
